Pencil skirts

A pencil skirt is a woman's skirt with a straight and narrow cut. It often hugs the curves of a woman's body, making it figure revealing. Typically, the skirt ends just at or slightly below the knee.

A popular style in the 1950s, the pencil skirt was frequently seen in women's office wear. Earlier versions have existed since 1915, and could have been floor or ankle length, but the 1950s brought the style great popularity. So did the 1960's, with the mini skirt version, which is trending now again in the 21st century.

The pencil skirt remains a popular style, though each year's fashions may assert its pre-eminence or declare it "out." It is often sold as part of a woman's suit and may be paired with jackets or tee shirts of any length. Length of the actual skirt can vary from year to year, but generally, any length that is much above the knee is not considered this style, but is instead a mini-skirt.

Often, women think that the pencil skirt is only for the very slim, but this is not the case. Women with curves may feel that the skirt will showcase them in an unflattering way; this can certainly occur when the skirt is too tight, but a good fitting one may emphasize the feminine curves without pointing out what women feel are their figure flaws. Women with a little extra weight or curve may turn toward loose clothing to hide supposed figure defects, but this often makes the body look bulkier. A fitted skirt is usually more flattering than a bulkier or looser fitting one.

Sizing chart

Your pencil skirt should always look smooth, especially when standing up straight. If you have bumps or rolls, the skirt is too tight. Go up a size. It will make sitting at your desk, as well as getting in and out of a vehicle a much more pleasant experience!

Wear it for daytime
When it comes to rocking a pencil skirt for the office, choose a neutral colour, which works for nearly any setting and can also be worn for those last-minute happy hour get-togethers. Make sure you tuck in your blouse to better define your waist and give your outfit an overall polished flair. You can also pair it with a fitted blazer or a sleek cardigan.

Wear it after work
Have a last-minute evening affair to attend? Add instant glamour to your pencil skirt with sparkling jewelry and pumps to elongate your figure. And if you aren’t a fan of heels, simply throw a pair of matching ballet flats into your bag for quick access to comfort once you’re done for the night.

Wear it on weekends
When wearing a pencil skirt for a casual weekend outing, you could pair it with a slouchy sweater or tied-up teeshirt. Add sneakers or slipper-style shoes to make this look even more casual. You can even wear a classic t-shirt tucked in and pair it with simple earrings and a necklace to go for a more effortlessly stylish look.
